Oh Justin

Did you happen to catch Justin Timberlake's red carpet appearance at the SAG awards? One reviewer called it sartorial promotion of his new single "Suit & Tie" in a snazzy Tom Ford plaid look accented with a checkered shirt, pocket square and trendy side-part. It's hipster-meets-Gatsby, with a hint of used-car salesman tossed in for good measure. Now that is a 'spoonful of vintage'!

Straight out of West Side Story

As we begin a new season of weddings, it's time to start thinking about engagement sessions. Have you ever thought of doing a styled engagement shoot? Technically, Carolyn and Ryan were already married but did a styled 'love shoot' in honour of their 14th wedding anniversary.

And do you want to know the best part? This dress is available at A Vintage Affair. It's super cute.

Cakeworks at Wedding Fair

Cakeworks, who are members of our collective, had an amazing display at Wedding Fair. It happened to be... well, vintage! Today we're going to share a few photos of the display. We asked Brenda from Cakeworks where her inspiration for the booth came from:

I have always loved primitive/vintage furniture and articles for my home and thought why not bring the two worlds together for a stunning dessert display. With a few vintage pieces of furniture and DIY accessories, it is so easy to make a big impact without spending a lot of money. For any bride and groom looking for "spectacular" without having to blow their entire wedding budget on their cake, this is a fabulous way to go!!

See you at the fair!!

Are you going to Wedding Fair? If you're engaged, we highly recommend that you grab a ticket and come on down. The show is at the BMO Centre on Sunday from 9:30 to 5:30. Two members of our collective will be there so be sure to check them out.

Watch for Brenda and Brian from Cakeworks.

Thinking of adding some Gatsby touches to your wedding? This is a beautiful Art Deco cake they created for this shoot.

Dispelling vintage myths!

Recently Tara Whittaker featured a wedding on her blog, with great examples of how to add vintage touches to a modern wedding. As we scrolled through the photos, there were 3 things that really impressed us:

1. Vintage can = elegant. Krista & Jeremy were married at the Delta Kananaskis and took full advantage of this luxury hotel with its magnificent, mountain views by adding the vintage touches they loved.

2. Classic vs. Kitsch. We loved the fact that for their wedding decor, they invested in lasting pieces that will become family heirlooms. The hutch they used for their dessert buffet was purchased in a thrift store, re-finished by the couple and now sits in their living room.

The groom (and a few of his friends) were vintage car buffs and they used these restored beauties as their wedding cars and during their wedding photographs.

3. The fashions were completely 2012. The bride's gown (Watters) had a romantic feel with a modern sensibility. The skirt was comprised of layers of lace.

The bridesmaids also wore flirty Watters dresses but Coutu Kitsch necklaces provided that mix of old and new.

Congratulations to a classic couple (with vintage hearts), Krista & Jeremy!

Toe Tappin' Swing

Happy Monday everyone! We at ASOV are so pleased to welcome Toe Tappin' Swing to our collective. Have you ever thought of doing a choreographed swing dance at your wedding? Or maybe if you have two left feet like me, you dream of staying upright and not leading. Our friends Robin & Matthew at Toe Tappin' Swing can help you make that first dance memorable.

Wouldn't it be fun to amaze your guests with something like this?

Never too much Downton Abbey

As we await the premiere of Downton Abbey Season 3, we thought today would be the perfect opportunity to share a shoot from last spring, that several members of our collective participated in. It's also timely since we recently came across a post by our friends at Bridal Tweet, where they predict trends for 2013. Given our penchant for vintage, we were thrilled to read that they predict "Victoria luxury, flapper style and art deco" will be favourites.

"By that I mean, rich colors (i.e. aubergine, scarlet, royal blue) or all bright whites, thick velvet, chunky crystal, candelabras, lots of lace, fringe, graceful dresses, hairpins and tiaras. All this will be done with an elegant simplicity. It won't be themey or tacky. Weddings will have a sense of hipness layered with rich textures and an air of sophistication. I base my prediction on a few things:

Downton Abbey's popularity will continue to grow especially with a wedding in season three.

The remake of The Great Gatsby is coming out in 2013.

As we slowly climb out of our recession, the comfy barn wedding will morph into a more sophisticated affair." - Maria of A Sweet Start

"Weddings will be really cinematic and vintage inspired" - Tanya of Bowties and Butterflies

"I think the Art Deco trend is going to be big for 2013. It has elements of the vintage trend that was so big in 2012, such as cut glass decorations, lace and pearls. But it's more formal with its old Hollywood vibe - eg. satin, fine jewelry, fur accents, feathers. It's great for a more formal setting because the color scheme is often white, black and gold although silver is a great choice too. As a cake designer, I'm definitely inspired by Art Deco/Great Gatsby-esque decor and fashion and it's showing up in my cake designs for an upcoming bridal show." - Ann Yankowsky of Style Cakes
